Kosovo has become the first country to offer to accept Britain's rejected asylum seekers as part of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's plan for migrant "return centres".

Albin Kurti, the prime minister of Kosovo, said his country "wants to help the United Kingdom" with its efforts to combat illegal immigration in exchange for more support to strengthen its national security against threats from Serbia and Russia.

Speaking before a summit of Western Balkan leaders hosted by Starmer in London on Wednesday, Kurti said talks were taking place between officials from the United Kingdom and Kosovo.

This makes Kosovo the first country to confirm its interest in Starmer's plan to create a series of return centres where rejected asylum seekers would be sent after exhausting all their appeal routes in the UK.

While the topic of return centres is not on the official agenda of the summit, Starmer hopes to make progress in talks with some of the participating countries.

Milojko Spajic, the prime minister of Montenegro, said his country would be open to negotiating a return center deal, but only if Britain invested significantly in its infrastructure, more specifically 8 billion euros in rail infrastructure.

However, the presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a three-member body that serves as the head of state, said it had "no intention, nor any willingness, to enter into any agreement that would include the acceptance of rejected asylum seekers" from the United Kingdom.

Edi Rama reiterated his opposition to Britain's efforts to create return centers, saying: "When it comes to centers, or whatever they are called, I have said and I repeat: never in Albania."
