Prime Minister of Estonia - Citizens: Prepare for power outages

The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kalas, has warned her citizens that there could be disruptions if Russia cuts off the Baltic states from the common electricity grid.

"We have to be prepared for the fact that Russia could disconnect Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from the electricity grid," said Kalas.

"It would be good to prepare for possible power outages, this affects the public sector, companies and every individual," she added, describing possible outages as temporary.

Seventeen years since they joined the EU, the Baltic states, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are still dependent on Russia for electricity imports. A €1.6 billion EU-funded project aims to disconnect them from the common electricity grid they share with Russia and Belarus by 2025.
