Iran's Revolutionary Guard called on the Islamic Republic's judicial authorities on Thursday to prosecute those who, according to it, "spread false news and rumours" regarding the reasons for the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in custody. Her death has sparked nationwide protests.

Earlier today, protesters in Tehran and other cities across the country torched police stations and vehicles, amid growing public anger that has not subsided.

Mahsa Amini fell into a coma and died last week in custody. She was arrested in Tehran for what was described as "inappropriate clothing". Authorities have said they will launch an investigation into the cause of her death.

In a statement, the Revolutionary Guard expressed its condolences to the family and relatives of the 22-year-old.

"We have asked the judiciary to identify those who spread fake news and rumors on social networks as well as on the streets, and who endanger the psychological safety of society. We will face them with determination", the statement said.

Iranian media reported that pro-government protests are scheduled to take place on Friday.

"The will of the Iranian people is this: do not spare the criminals," read a headline in the influential Kayhan newspaper, a hardline publication.

The protests over Mahsa Amin's death are the largest in the Islamic Republic since 2019. Most have been concentrated in Iran's Kurdish-populated northwest, but have also spread to the capital and at least 50 cities and towns across the country. The police used force to disperse the protesters.

A group of United Nations experts called for accountability for the death of the 22-year-old.
