Italy has decided to close its air and sea borders with Spain, in response to the migrant crisis that has erupted in Ceuta and concerns about the security of the Schengen area's borders.

The decision was taken by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, after analyzing the situation in the Committee for the Analysis of Immigration and Border Security, a meeting chaired by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi.

In parallel, Piantedosi held a telephone conversation with his French counterpart, Laurent Nuñez, during which they agreed to strengthen controls on the land border between Italy and France, within the framework of existing cooperation agreements between the police forces of the two countries.

Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, has defended Italy's decision to temporarily suspend Schengen with Spain, calling it a necessary measure to guarantee security.

In a reaction on the social network X, Tajani stated that "the temporary suspension of Schengen with Spain is a necessary choice to protect the security of our citizens and to protect European borders."

According to him, the migration crisis in Ceuta shows that protecting the external borders of the European Union is a shared responsibility of all member states.

"We must work together to prevent the entry of uncontrolled flows of migrants into the territory of the European Union, with all the risks this brings, including the threat of terrorism, which must be fought without any hesitation," Tajani said.
