US bombs Iran after attempted attack on US troops

The United States has launched a series of air strikes on dozens of Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in response to Tehran's attempt to launch ballistic missiles at US bases in Jordan and ships sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation lasted about an hour and targeted military command centers, missile and drone bases, coastal surveillance systems, as well as Iranian naval capability facilities.

US President Donald Trump declared that Washington would respond decisively to any Iranian attack.

"We're going to hit them very hard, because now it's our turn. They know this was coming and they asked us not to do it," Trump told reporters.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had targeted a US air base and a command center in Jordan, calling the action a response to the US military's "aggressive acts." It also claimed to have struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation in tensions comes just a day after joint US and Saudi airstrikes on Iranian-backed groups in Iraq. According to US authorities, the operations were carried out in response to more than 30 Iranian-linked drone attacks in the past 72 hours.

The Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, dominated by Shiite militias backed by Tehran, said at least 20 of their fighters were killed in the bombings. Meanwhile, the Iraqi presidency condemned the attacks, calling them a violation of the country's sovereignty. President Trump, on the other hand, said the operations were coordinated with the Iraqi government.

At the same time, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman conveyed to the US president Riyadh's desire to reduce tensions in the region. The conflict, which has entered its fifth month, continues to remain without a diplomatic solution, despite ongoing efforts at negotiations.
