Crete on fire alert, flames out of control in Rethymno, 2 thousand tourists

The large fire in Rethymno, Crete, remains out of control, where strong winds have created a front of more than 15 kilometers. This morning, ground forces were significantly reinforced, with 224 firefighters, 53 vehicles and eleven foot teams.

The aircraft took off as soon as dawn broke, but due to strong winds they were unable to intervene on most of the front.

A major evacuation operation took place overnight in the tourist area of Agia Galini. Around two thousand foreign tourists were evacuated from their hotels and accommodations and transferred to safer places, to other hotels and to the closed gym in Heraklion.

According to local authorities, in total, thousands of residents and visitors have fled the wider area of Agia Galini. Mattresses, food and basic necessities have been made available for their shelter, while assistance is being provided by the Red Cross, police, municipalities and volunteers.

The flames have burned agricultural land, olive groves, stables, animals and homes. Authorities say that, at the moment, no inhabited areas are directly threatened, but the situation remains extremely dangerous.

The fire started on Wednesday afternoon in the Kria Vrisi area and, driven by the wind, spread rapidly south of Rethymno.

Two firefighters, aged 58 and 25, who were trapped by the fire, lost their lives in the battle with the flames. A third firefighter lost his life during an operation on another fire front in Gythio in the Peloponnese.

Meanwhile, in Plomari on the island of Lesvos, the situation appears to be improving, although winds are causing new fires. The flames had approached homes, while parts of the town were evacuated. In Sitia, the fire is confined to a difficult-to-reach mountain peak and does not threaten residential areas.

Fires were also recorded on other islands, including Paros, while Greek authorities remain on high alert, as winds in the Aegean are expected to reach up to eight force.
