Chinese authorities say they have arrested an individual suspected of spying for Britain's foreign intelligence service, MI6.

China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) said the individual was a foreigner and was trying to gather information inside the country.

This is the latest arrest in a Chinese security campaign to combat foreign espionage.

The British government has not commented on the claims of the Chinese authorities.

The news of the arrest was made in a statement released in a post by MSS on the Chinese social network WeChat.

He said the suspected spy was called "Huang" and came from a "third country", suggesting he was neither British nor Chinese.

The statement states that the individual who was arrested was the head of an overseas consulting agency.

China has been involved in a crackdown on foreign business consultants operating in the country.

It has accused several firms of trying to obtain information about Chinese businesses and gather sensitive or national security-related information.
