The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced his resignation from office, while his mandate expired at the end of November.

His decision has caused controversy among European heads of government, as such a departure would risk the role temporarily falling into the hands of Hungary's nationalist prime minister, Viktor Orban. We remind you that Hungary will take over the next 6-month presidency of the 27-member bloc on July 1 next.

Likewise, the European Parliament elections are scheduled for June. He is expected to lead the list of the Liberal Party of the Reformist Movement. "It is my responsibility to give an account of my work in recent years and to propose a project for the future of Europe. This means that I would continue my work as president of the European Council until I was sworn in as an MEP on July 16," he said. Michel has served as president of the European Council, the group of government leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union (EU), since late 2019. Prior to his EU responsibilities, he served as Prime Minister of Belgium.
