The West does not want to send weapons to Ukraine that would reach Russia.
Would such a weapon change the situation on the battlefield?
Every day of the war, and especially after the recent massive Russian airstrike on Ukrainian cities, it is more and more apparent that this is also a war of military capabilities.
Ukraine is largely dependent on military aid from the West and meanwhile has major problems maintaining air defense systems with the necessary missiles and ammunition.
The Ukrainian military command is convinced that the only way to stop Russian aggression is its ability to destroy targets in the enemy's rear, that is, in the area of Russia's internationally recognized borders.
But right here the West has defined a clear line, not to send such weapons that hit Russia internally. But a heated debate has recently opened up over whether Germany should send its Taurus missiles.
The government spokesman repeated this Wednesday that " there is no change in Berlin's position " on this matter.
Before that, Chancellor Scholz has expressed the fear of " escalation " and the introduction of Germany into this war conflict, which the media understands as an explanation for the refusal to send those missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers.
"When the Americans send you..."
Ukraine itself is a large country, which does not necessarily mean that the Taurus would target targets on Russian territory – but it is possible.
Kiev guarantees that it will not use Western weapons for attacks on Russian territory, but the West continues to hesitate.
Of course, Great Britain and France sent missiles with a slightly longer range to Ukraine – Storm Shadow and Scalp EG can hit targets at a distance of 250 kilometers.
And this means that they can reach targets in the rear of the Russian army in the occupied territories as well as in Crimea.
"It seems to me that Chancellor Scholz would give Ukraine such weapons, only if the Americans would send them similar weapons - ATACMS with a longer range," Nico Lange, a military expert, tells us.
He hopes that "soon" such a decision will be made in Washington and Berlin.
The situation was similar before with the German Leopard 2 tanks: Berlin agreed to send such modern tanks to the Ukrainians only when the US did the same. Last fall, Washington sent ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, but with a range of about 160 kilometers.
Hrabski understands the position of the West and Germany that "they do not want to provoke Russia as a country with nuclear potential" and they do not want to risk a Russian attack on a country that is a member of NATO. But is it also the West's fault that Ukraine still failed to significantly move the front line in the summer?
Austrian officer and historian, Colonel Markus Reisner believes that the West is not completely honest in relation to Ukraine: " Not everything we have in our arsenals is sent. It's hard to drive a nail without a real hammer ," says the Austrian.
According to him, " the fear of many Western countries is often based on pure selfishness " and the desire to return to the "old life", hoping to " negotiate good agreements with Russia ". But those times are irretrievably gone, Reisner thinks.
He also points to the United Nations Charter, according to which Ukraine has the full right to defend itself against Russian attacks – no matter what Putin calls this war.
According to his knowledge, Ukrainian special forces have indeed been operating on the territory of Russia for a long time.
The drone and missile attacks mainly serve as a message to the Russian population that this is not "a war taking place somewhere far away".
Reisner acknowledges that it is difficult to avoid civilian casualties in such attacks in urban centers. But the consequences of Ukraine's attacks on Russia "are in no way comparable to what Russia itself is doing" in attacks on Ukrainian cities.
" The Russians fired over 500 missiles into Ukraine in just a few days ," says the Austrian officer. "And how did the West react? With only a few sentences and rhetorical threats ."/ dw
