Authorities in Ecuador are scrambling to track down one of the country's "most dangerous" criminals after officials revealed on Sunday that he had escaped from his cell at a detention center in the port city of Guayaquil.
Ecuador's Prosecutor's Office said it has opened an investigation into the escape of José Adolfo Macías Villamar, known as Fito, from the Litoral prison, the country's largest and supposedly most secure prison complex.
This came after the commander of Ecuador's national police, General Cesar Zapata, told reporters during a press conference on Sunday that the armed forces noticed that an inmate at the maximum security prison was missing.
"Until now, Fito's location and escape method are unknown," presidential spokesman Roberto Izurieta said at the press conference.
He said that a contingent of 3,000 people, members of the country's elite forces, are looking for the drug trafficker.
"We cannot, as you understand, give many details of this operation", said Izurieta. "We are convinced that with the support of the armed forces and the police and their professionalism, we will successfully complete this search," he added.
Who is Fito?
Known as one of Ecuador's most dangerous criminals, Fito is the leader of the Los Choneros cartel, a dangerous gang involved in drug trafficking and extortion. Many of its members, even though they are in prison, have a great influence on drug trafficking in Latin America.
Like other gangs, Los Choneros' criminal activity is believed to extend outside prison walls, and is even said to function as an operational arm of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel.
Fito had been under arrest since 2011, but from prison he only became the leader of Los Choneros after the murder of former leader Jorge Luis Zambrano González (who was known as Rasquiña) in 2020. Fito was serving a 34-year sentence for drug trafficking, organized crime, and murder.
This is not the first time escaping from prison for the 44-year-old leader of the dangerous gang. In February 2013, he escaped from La Roca, a maximum security prison in the Litoral prison complex, before being captured in May of that year.
Fito has also been suspected of ordering the assassination of the opposition leader in Ecuador.
In the run-up to the country's presidential election last year, candidate Fernando Villavicencio - who spoke out against Ecuador's powerful drug cartels - was assassinated in the capital Quito in August. Days before his death, Villavicencio said he and his team had received threats from Fito and Los Choneros. Three days after the assassination, Fito was transferred again to the maximum security prison in La Roca.
