Romania's central electoral authority on Sunday banned extremist pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu from running in the repeat round of May's presidential election.

The rejection of his candidacy, condemned by far-right party leaders as undemocratic, could go to the constitutional court.

Dozens of supporters of populist Georgescu gathered outside the election office chanting "Freedom" and almost tried to break through the security cordon.

Georgescu submitted his candidacy for the May runoff on Friday, amid suspicions that he would not be allowed to run.

Romania's highest court annulled the vote two days before the second round in December, citing allegations of Russian interference in Georgescu's favor, which Moscow has denied.

Members of US President Donald Trump's administration have called the cancellation of the Romanian election an example of European governments suppressing free speech and political opponents. Tech billionaire and Trump adviser Elon Musk called the election authority's decision "crazy" on his social platform X.

Georgescu is under criminal investigation on six charges, including membership in a fascist organization and spreading false information about campaign financing. He has denied all charges.
