A serious attack took place overnight in the waters off Tunisia, where a military drone hit the “Family Boat”, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian mission bound for the Gaza Strip. According to “La Repubblica”, several members of the organizing committee were on board, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, Yasemin Acar and Thiago Avila.

According to activists, the drone dropped an explosive device that caused a fire on the upper deck of the ship. Fortunately, all people on board are in good health and the flames have been extinguished.

Tunisian authorities, who have opened an official investigation, deny the presence of a drone and report a fire caused by life jackets. But images and videos published by activists raise strong suspicions of a deliberate attack, linked to earlier warnings by Israeli officials.

Footage released by activists shows the moment the bomb was dropped from the drone and the explosion can be clearly heard. However, Tunisian authorities appear to be trying to defuse the situation. "According to initial investigations, there was a fire in the life jackets," Tunisian National Guard spokesman Houcem Eddine Jebabli told AFP, adding that "no drone was detected in the area."

The Portuguese-flagged vessel has suffered significant damage and cannot continue its journey. The flotilla is considering the possibility of transferring the crew to other vessels or finding a replacement vessel.

This is the second attack on a Flotilla ship this year, following the incident in May where the Al Damir ship was hit by two drones near Malta.

The organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla have described this act as an attack against a peaceful civilian mission, and have stated that they will not back down from their goal of breaking the blockade on Gaza and expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.
