A father who had been on the run with his three children in the New Zealand bush for almost four years has been shot dead by police.

Tom Phillips, who disappeared with his children in late 2021, had managed to elude police despite years of searching. His case captured national attention and remains one of New Zealand's greatest mysteries.

The BBC reports that Phillips was killed in a shootout at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, in which a police officer was seriously injured.

Police were responding to a report of a robbery at a commercial property in Piopio, a small town in northern New Zealand, when Phillips and one of his children were seen riding a four-wheeler.

Police say they chased them and then used spiked tires to stop them. As a result, the vehicle went off the road.

Deputy Police Commissioner Jill Rogers told reporters that when officers arrived at the vehicle, they were met with gunfire, which they were forced to return. The first officer to arrive on the scene was shot in the head and is in critical condition. Another patrol unit was involved in the exchange of fire with Phillips, who was shot and died at the scene.

Two of the children were found later in the day at a remote campsite in dense forest. The child Phillips was with, who has not been identified, provided “crucial” information that helped locate the other two children later in the day. All three children are uninjured, Rogers said.

It is not known whether the children have been informed of their father's death.

Police have notified Phillips' mother and parents that the children are safe, although they have not commented on who will care for them going forward.

The children's mother, known only as Cat, told local media outlet RNZ that she felt "deeply relieved" that "this drama is over", as she had missed her children for all these four years.
