American Brian Hooper was released from a Colorado prison on Tuesday after spending 27 years behind bars because a woman accused him of a murder that ultimately turned out to be her and not his.

He spent nearly 30 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit, but the truth finally came to light thanks to a confession from his wife, who pleaded guilty this year.

In 1998, a jury convicted Hooper of the murder and attempted kidnapping of 77-year-old Ann Prazniak.

Police found Prazniak's body in April 1998 in a cardboard box wrapped in Christmas lights in a closet in her Minneapolis apartment. The victim's ankles, nose, mouth, wrists and head were bound, and her body was wrapped in garbage bags, blankets and sheets.

Her cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation, and she had been dead two weeks to a month before police found the body, according to court documents.

Hooper's conviction, which received three life sentences, was based largely on the testimony of a woman.

However, during an appeal by the man, authorities realized that some evidence in the case proved his innocence, while many witnesses withdrew their testimonies.

Eventually, the woman, who was a key witness in the case at Brian Hooper's trial, finally confessed to killing the woman herself and then hiding her body. The guilty party is now in a Georgia prison, while Hooper has been reunited with his children.
