The crisis between the United States and Venezuela is deepening. Two Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets have flown over the Caribbean Sea, passing over a US guided-missile destroyer, the USS Jason Dunham.

This event marks another escalation in the tense relations between US President Donald Trump and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, highlighting the lack of a diplomatic channel between the two countries.

The Pentagon called the flight a "provocative act" undertaken by the "cartel that runs Venezuela," and in response, ordered the deployment of 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico, officially as part of an anti-drug operation.

On the other hand, Maduro has ordered a day of popular mobilization against the US, while Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López declared that the country is "ready for any attack."

Venezuela, although it does not have sufficient capacity to confront the US militarily, has suicide drones and naval attack vessels provided by its ally, Iran.

The tension comes a few days after the US announced the elimination of 11 drug traffickers in the Caribbean and after sending a fleet of eight warships, including three missiles and a submarine, to waters near Venezuela.

A 29-second video released by Trump showing the elimination of traffickers has sparked reactions in several Latin American countries, including Colombia. Venezuela has described the video as a “montage created by artificial intelligence,” while Trump claims that it is about members of the criminal gang “Tren de Aragua” who were trying to enter the US to “kill a lot of people.”

As "La Repubblica" writes, Maduro has accused US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of inciting war, while the latter has warned of other similar operations in the future.

US experts currently rule out an invasion of Venezuela, stressing that Trump is more intent on destabilizing Maduro's regime and pushing for his removal from power. Trump's strategy is costly and reminiscent of the Cold War, when the Soviet Union used Cuba to challenge US influence in the hemisphere.

In this context, Maduro warned that if the US undertakes military aggression, Venezuela will enter a “phase of armed war.” During a military event broadcast on state television, he spoke of an “organized response by the entire people to defend sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

However, Maduro added: "None of the differences we have and have had should lead to a military conflict."
