United States President Donald Trump declared on Sunday from the White House that he is ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia, in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.

"We are prepared for a new round of measures against Russia if the situation in Ukraine does not change," Trump said in his statement, without providing further details on the nature of the new sanctions.

This warning comes at a tense moment, especially today, when over 800 Russian drones struck Ukraine and when international diplomacy is trying to find a way out of the conflict that has been going on for almost four years.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has also reacted to Russia's overnight attack on Kiev.

Starmer has described the attacks in Kiev and across Ukraine as brutal.

"I am appalled by the latest brutal attack overnight in Kiev and across Ukraine, which killed civilians and hit infrastructure," said Sir Keir Starmer.

"For the first time, the heart of Ukraine's civilian government was damaged," Starmer added.

"These cowardly attacks show that Putin believes he can act with impunity. He is not serious about peace," he added.

"Now, more than ever, we must stand firm in our support for Ukraine and its sovereignty," Starmer concluded.

The reactions came after Russia launched its most powerful airstrike on the Ukrainian capital since the start of the war. Over 800 drones and 13 missiles hit Kiev overnight, causing widespread casualties and damage.

According to Ukrainian authorities, three people lost their lives - including a baby.

The government headquarters in Kiev was hit directly for the first time, suffering damage to the roof and upper floors.

The massive attack overwhelmed the city's air defense system, which usually successfully defends the center of Kiev. Of the 805 drones launched, 751 were shot down, while 9 of the 13 missiles hit targets on Ukrainian territory.

Kiev is facing one of the darkest nights of the war. The Ukrainian government has requested more military assistance from Western allies as tensions with Russia continue to escalate.
