A humanitarian aid ship aiming to reach the Gaza Strip has been stopped by the Israeli military in the Mediterranean, leading to the detention of several prominent activists including environmentalist Greta Thunberg, “Game of Thrones” actor Liam Cunningham and French MEP Rima Hassan.

The ship, the Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was set out to deliver aid to one of the areas hardest hit by the blockade and war, where 2.1 million Palestinians face extreme hunger. Activists reported that Israeli forces boarded the ship in international waters, using drones and dispersive substances to stop the crew.

"If you're watching this video, we were captured in international waters by Israeli forces," Thunberg said in a video released after communications with the ship were cut off.

Israel's Foreign Ministry called the activists' action a "media provocation," while Defense Minister Israel Katz said he had ordered a halt to any attempts to break the naval blockade around Gaza.

International organizations and the United Nations have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where aid has been blocked for over 11 weeks.

The group of activists is currently in the Israeli port of Ashdod and is awaiting deportation. Hamas, meanwhile, has called the detention a "flagrant violation of international law."

This incident brings international tensions back into focus over aid access to Gaza and brings a new clash between governments and activists acting on behalf of humanitarian rights.
