Italy on alert for nurses, about 70,000 are missing

Italy is on the alert for the lack of nurses and is trying to find in every corner of the world. Currently, about 70,000 are required and with the arrival of the tourist season, the problem of nurses becomes even more acute.

According to officials, in the next 4 years the current cadre of about 460 thousand nurses will lose over 100 thousand units due to the mass exodus of nurses from Italian hospitals. A loss that already from 2022 will weigh on the health system with a shortage of about 65-70 thousand nurses.

But the situation is warned to worsen more and more, due to pensions, resignations, transfers abroad where the economic benefits are significantly higher than those given to the Italian nursing staff.

The problem is also related to the fact that not enough nurses graduate in Italy. In the last 10 years, only about 12 thousand graduated per year, very little compared to the needs.

"A time bomb", the nurses' union considers the staff shortage situation which "is ready to explode in the summer months". Among the regions most in difficulty, Lombardy is in first place. The data comes from a survey of the Nurses' union, which highlights how in the regions most affected by the phenomenon there are an average of 12-13 patients per nurse.

An average that goes far beyond the maximum of 6 patients to have quality health care and there is a risk of cutting at least 10% of beds due to staff shortages. The average salary of nurses in Italy is 1,758 euros per month.
