Sources to Reuters: Putin calls for ceasefire on current battlefield borders
Vladimir Putin

The Russian president is ready to end the war in Ukraine through a ceasefire agreement that would recognize the current borders on the battlefield. This is what 4 Russian sources quoted by the Reuters news agency claim, according to which Putin is prepared to continue the war if Kiev and the West do not respond to the proposal.

Three of the sources, who are aware of the high-level discussions in the Kremlin, say the Russian president has expressed frustration to a small group of advisers over what he sees as Western-backed efforts to derail the negotiations. with Zelensky's decision to exclude the possibility of talks.

"Putin can continue the war as long as it takes, but he is also ready for a ceasefire, to suspend the war," said sources quoted by Reuters.

Reuters news agency says it has spoken to a total of five people who have worked or are working with Putin in high-level political and business circles, but the fifth official would not comment on the current frontline war freeze. Putin's spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, responding to a request for comment, said the Kremlin chief had repeatedly made it clear that Russia was open to dialogue to achieve its goals, and that the country did not want a perpetual war.

As the sources claim, Putin believes that the achievements so far in the war were enough to sell victory to the Russians. But for now, the possibility of a ceasefire or even peace talks seems remote, as Zelenskiy vows to recapture lost territory and rejects dialogue with Putin.

One of the sources cited by Reuters predicts that the deal cannot be reached as long as Zelenskiy is in power, unless Moscow chooses to bypass it by signing the deal with Washington.
