Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Italy will participate in the Peace Board, but only as an observer, thus bypassing the constitutional difficulties that she herself had mentioned three weeks ago, Italian media report.
"We were invited as an observer country and in our opinion, this is a good solution to the problem we have regarding constitutional compliance with membership in the Peace Board," Meloni told reporters.
"I think we will respond positively to this invitation to participate as an observer country, at what level we still have to see, because the invitation arrived yesterday," the Prime Minister added.
According to Meloni, after all the work Italy has done to stabilize the Middle East, "an Italian and European presence is necessary."
The first official meeting of the Peace Board is expected on February 19 in Washington, with the participation of at least twenty countries. Donald Trump is expected to announce a multi-billion dollar reconstruction plan for Gaza.
