A court in Mexico has ordered the release from prison of a notorious drug lord who founded the powerful Sinaloa cartel along with Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

63-year-old Héctor Palma has spent the last 28 years in prisons in the US and Mexico, as his "career" as a criminal became known to the general public through the Netflix series "Narcos: Mexico".

He was found guilty of drug trafficking in 2005, but could now be released after the court said there was not enough evidence to continue holding him.

Palma's lawyer said his client has paid all his obligations to justice so he can be released soon.

Palma is one of the most notorious drug lords of the 1980s and 90s. He began his criminal career as a hitman for Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, one of the founders of the now defunct drug cartel in Guadalajara.

When Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo was arrested in 1989, the criminal empire split into two, one controlled by the Félix nephews, based in Tijuana, and the other controlled by Palma and Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, based in Sinaloa state .

The two separate groups soon began to compete with each other, and Palma was accused of "betraying" Felix Gallardo by keeping the proceeds of a drug shipment for himself.

It was at this time that Palma became involved in one of the most horrific and notorious vendettas to engulf Mexico's underworld.

A Venezuelan man, Rafael Clavel Moreno, wooed Palma's wife, Guadalupe Leija, convincing her to move to the United States. After reaching San Francisco, Clavel Moreno killed the woman and sent him the severed head. Moreno then killed the couple's two minor children.

Palma then retaliated by killing Clavel Moreno's family, as well as a number of relatives and close associates of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo.

Palma was extradited to the US in 2007 and surrendered to Mexican authorities in 2016 after serving his drug-trafficking sentence.
