Switzerland has conducted one of the largest military exercises carried out in three decades in front of an imaginary enemy. 4,000 soldiers tried to repel their opponent with grenades, live ammunition, while also highlighting their self-defense skills.

This exercise took place in 4 different cantons over 9 days, at a time when Switzerland's role in European defense has come into focus amid calls for it to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

Last Thursday, a group of infantry soldiers – most of whom were civilians taking part in regular military service – slowly climbed a hill, using a smoke grenade to conceal their movements before firing at their targets. .

The LUX 23 exercises were planned since 2021 and were not organized as a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but according to the Swiss army this current panorama has made the exercise even more important.

Public and international pressure has mounted for Switzerland to end its ban on arms exports to war zones, but some political factions fear this would mark the end of its foreign policy tradition of neutrality.

"We understand that people confuse the need to support a country under attack and the need to hold a place for the aggressor, when designated as such, to come and talk and find solutions," said Mauro Poggia, state adviser in charge of Geneva from the Department of Security, Population and Health of the canton.

"There is nothing worse than closing doors... Switzerland should be this exit door that is always there. This door must be protected."
