Fighting in eastern Ukraine has intensified as Ukrainian and Russian military forces are clashing in at least three areas in that region, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said.

Kiev has already launched the long-awaited counter-offensive to regain the territory occupied by Russia, and has made progress in some parts of the east and south of the state.

Maliar said on Telegram that Russian forces are attacking Kupjansk, in the Kharkiv region, for the second day in a row, REL reports.

"We are on the defensive. There are fierce battles, positions on both sides change dynamically several times a day."

Maliar has also mentioned that both armies are fighting near the destroyed city of Bahmut, but that, according to her, Ukrainian forces are "gradually moving" to its southern side.

She said that the military troops of Kiev are repelling the Russian attacks in Avdivka and Marianka.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Russian state television on Sunday that the Ukrainian counter-offensive "is not succeeding" and that efforts to break Russian defenses have failed.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

The Russian president calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes.
