NASA has lost contact with the Voyager 2 probe, which is billions of miles from Earth, and it has been mistaken for the wrong command.

The spacecraft, which has been exploring the universe since 1977, moved the antenna two degrees away from Earth last month after a mistake by astronomers sending the wrong commands.

Voyager 2 is located about 19.9 billion kilometers from Earth and travels into space at a speed of 55,346 kilometers per hour. Since July, the probe has neither commanded nor sent data to the Deep Space Network system, a giant network of antennas worldwide.

The probe is programmed to renew its orientation several times a year, pointing the antenna towards Earth. But the next renewal is expected to happen on 15 October and Nasa is instead instead able to restore the connection.

Voyager 2 is the only probe to have flown close to Neptune and Urano, while Voyager 1 is currently 24 billion kilometers from Earth, making it the most distant land object in space.
