National Guard member dies in Washington, injured in attack near White House

Sarah Beckstrom, the 20-year-old National Guard member who was injured in the shooting in Washington, D.C., has died.

President Donald Trump confirmed her death, while the second wounded soldier, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, is in critical condition.

Two Guard members were shot at close range Wednesday afternoon near Farragut Square, just blocks from the White House. They were on patrol when they were attacked.

Police arrested the suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who came to the U.S. in 2021 under the “Welcome Allies” program. U.S. officials confirmed that he previously worked with the CIA and partner forces in Afghanistan.

Prosecutors announced that Lakanwal will be charged with assault with intent to murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, and stressed that the death penalty will be sought. If Wolfe does not survive, the charge will be aggravated to "first-degree murder."

The incident has caused strong reactions, as the National Guard has been patrolling the American capital for several months following an increase in crime.
