A serious incident is reported to have happened yesterday morning in Podujevë, where a mother and daughter were arrested after being accused of being involved in the murder of a newborn baby. 

A 19-year-old, the baby's mother, is one of those arrested, who allegedly performed an illegal abortion and then sought medical help at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo.

According to the media in Kosovo, the 19-year-old girl, when she was 7 months pregnant, in cooperation with her mother, after giving birth to the baby in the bathroom of the house, is suspected of throwing it in the toilet.

The Basic Prosecutor's Office in Pristina and the Police also reacted to the serious case.

"In the case you refer to, we inform you that the State Prosecutor has issued a ruling on the detention of two persons (female), due to the suspicion that they have committed the criminal offenses of "Murder of a baby during childbirth" and "Assisting in the murder of the baby during birth", says the answer of the Prosecutor's Office.

"It is reported that the suspected Kosovar woman who was suspected of being pregnant and had an illegal abortion sought medical treatment at the KKUK. In connection with the case, two suspects were arrested and by the decision of the prosecutor they are sent to custody" - announced the Police.

According to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kosovo, a mother who takes her own baby's life during birth or immediately after birth, while the disorder caused by childbirth continues, is punished with imprisonment from three months to three years.
