The far-right Rassemblement National made historic progress in the first round of France's early legislative elections on Sunday, June 30, which was characterized by high turnout.

With 34% of the vote along with its allies, according to initial estimates, the party led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella almost doubled its result from the 2022 election as it hopes to take power for the first time.

President Emmanuel Macron, who declared early elections on June 9 after losing his side in the European elections, sees his coalition in third place, with 20.3%, after the alliance of left-wing parties, Nouveau Front Populaire, reached 28.1%, according to initial estimates by Ipsos Talan for France Télévisions, Radio France, France24/RFI and LCP Assemblée Nationale.

Following the publication of the first exit polls in France's far-right election, French President Emmanuel Macron commented on the developments to AFP news agency.

The French president has called for voters to support "Republican and Democratic" candidates in the second round of elections to be held next Sunday.

Macron also welcomed the high voter turnout in today's first round.
