A mother who chopped off the head of her 5-year-old son with a machete and then ate him has been declared mentally incompetent by a court in Egypt .

Hanaa Mohamed Hassan , 29 years old, was being tried for the massacre of her son, Youssef , but the judges said that she cannot serve the sentence. They have decided that the boy was killed " out of insanity " and she should be locked up in a psychiatric institution.

Youssef's uncle found parts of his body inside a bucket at their home in Faqus. After the arrest, the police stated that she had eaten part of her son's head because she " wanted him to always be with her ".

She had dismembered his body in the bathroom, then boiled his head and other parts and then eaten them.

Before the verdict, prosecutors debated whether Hassan had killed her son out of fear of losing custody to her ex-husband.

The preliminary psychiatric report stated that she was responsible for her premeditated actions because she had taken a notched stick and machete and locked all the doors and windows in the house.

He then shot his son three times in the head and dismembered the body in an attempt to destroy the evidence.

In a more in-depth assessment of her mental state, psychiatric experts found that Hassan was "delusional" and thought relatives were casting spells on her son. According to the report, she suffers from impaired judgment and does not understand the seriousness of her actions. The 29-year-old conceives the murder as a simple mistake.

After her arrest, she told the police that she suffers from "mental illness" and that she did not intend to kill her son. She lived alone with him after separating from her husband, who says the 29-year-old knew exactly what she was doing.

Kohët e fundit ajo po përpiqej ta largonte prej meje dhe mbillte urrejtje në zemrën e tij që ai mos të më afrohej.

The father's lawyer said Hassan had no expression on his face when he told investigators: " I wanted to free myself and him. I wanted to take revenge on his father and be free. His father keeps coming and trying to take him with him ." The 29-year-old will be confined to the Abbasiya Mental and Neurological Health Hospital in Cairo.
