Fears of the Israel-Hamas conflict spreading further on Thursday, when the United States announced that it had launched strikes in Syria.

The Pentagon said the airstrikes targeted two weapons and ammunition depots used by Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

However, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was careful to stress that the bombings were unrelated to the war, but were a response to recent attacks by Iranian-backed militias on US bases in Syria and Iraq.

"Iran seeks to hide its hand and deny its role in these attacks against our forces. We will not allow them, and if attacks by Iran's allies against US forces continue, we will not hesitate to take further measures to protect our citizens," said Austin.

US and coalition troops have reportedly been attacked at least 12 times in Iraq and 4 times in Syria since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, and a total of 21 personnel have received minor injuries.

Although the US has not accused Iran of having a direct role in the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas militants, it has noted that Iran has long supported the terrorist group.

Likewise, Iranian officials have openly criticized the US for providing Israel with weapons that were used to strike Gaza.

The White House announced Thursday that US President Joe Biden had delivered a strong and rare warning to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Thus, during the UN General Assembly in New York, the Foreign Minister of Tehran warned that Washington would not be spared from the fire that has engulfed the region if the violence in Gaza continues. The US has sent warships and on Thursday announced that they were moving another 900 troops to the region.
