The trial that could change the history of social networks: 30 states demand

Meta has suffered back-to-back losses in court over how its platforms have targeted and harmed young users, but a jury trial expected to begin Tuesday could pose the biggest threat yet to the company's business.

The lawsuit stems from a lawsuit filed in 2023 by 30 US states, including California and New York, which allege that Meta has repeatedly violated federal and state children's privacy laws.

Not only are the states seeking more than $1 trillion from Meta, they are also demanding that the company make changes to Instagram and Facebook, including removing the number of "likes" and the "infinite scroll" feature.

If Meta ultimately loses a case of this magnitude, it could force the company to make fundamental changes to the way young people use social media.

The states that have sued Meta are also seeking many other changes to the way Instagram and Facebook work for new users.

They demand that Meta:

implement a parental verification process for teen users;
change “dopamine-manipulating recommendation algorithms”;
remove many image filters that alter a person’s appearance in photos;
stop autoplaying videos;
stop creating multiple accounts;
remove disappearing or “ephemeral” posts, like Instagram Stories.
All of these features are essential parts of today’s user experience on Meta’s platforms.
