Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich will remain jailed on espionage charges until at least the end of June after a Moscow court on Tuesday rejected his appeal for freedom.
The 32-year-old American citizen was detained in late March 2023 while on a reporting trip and has spent over a year behind bars. Last month, his defense lawyers appealed the decision, which was rejected on Tuesday by the Moscow Court of Appeal.
His arrest in the city of Yekaterinburg shocked journalists in Russia, as authorities have not detailed what evidence they have to support the espionage allegations.
Gershkovich and his employer have denied the allegations, and the US government has wrongfully declared him a detainee.
Analysts have pointed out that Moscow could use imprisoned Americans as bargaining chips to demand the release of Russian citizens imprisoned in the West.
At least two American citizens arrested in Russia in recent years, including WNBA star Brittney Griner, have been exchanged for Russians imprisoned in the US.
