The German government will continue to call it Lake Ontario and will not use the name "Lake America," which US President Donald Trump has decided to call this lake located on the US-Canada border.
"This is an American decision to call this lake by another name. At the moment, this decision has no consequences for other countries," a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said today.
"For us, it remains Lake Ontario, which is the name traditionally used," he added.
The spokesperson used an example to explain Germany's position: "In the US, football is called 'soccer,' but that doesn't mean that in other countries it should also be called 'soccer.'"
Asked whether the German government fears that Trump might hold a grudge against Germany over this issue, the spokesman said that naming the waters should not be a reason to create political resentment towards anyone.
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America.
The border between the US and Canada passes through four of them.
Relations between Washington and Ottawa have been strained again in recent days, as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has refused to back down in the trade and tariff clash between the two countries.
Last year, Trump also decided to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, calling it the "Gulf of America."
