A precious necklace with hundreds of diamonds, which once belonged to Queen Nazli of Egypt, has been stolen from a museum in Vienna, Austrian police announced on Thursday.

The necklace, made by the famous French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels, was stolen in a robbery in the city of Milan on Tuesday. Police have released photos of the necklace and the two suspects in the theft.

The Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) confirmed that the robbery took place during a jewelry exhibition, but did not provide further details about the stolen object. The institution said that no one was injured and that it would not release any further information while the investigation continues.

According to data published on the museum's website, the necklace may be one of Queen Nazli's royal jewels, consisting of 673 diamonds with a total weight of more than 200 carats.

The jewelry was part of an exhibition organized by the MAK, which since the beginning of June has been presenting more than 300 works from the Van Cleef & Arpels collection.

A photo released by the museum shows the necklace behind a glass case. According to the exhibition description, it once belonged to Queen Nazli of Egypt, who wore it in 1939, during the wedding of her daughter, Fauzia, to the then Crown Prince of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who later became the Shah of Iran.

The value of the jewelry is considerable. The necklace was sold for about $4.3 million at an auction held by Sotheby's in New York in 2015.

According to Austrian police, two unknown individuals forced their way into the display case while the museum was open, took the jewelry, and ran away from the museum premises.

Authorities have released security camera footage showing two suspects dressed in black inside the museum.

The police continue their investigations to identify and arrest the perpetrators, while the necklace remains missing.
