US President Donald Trump has said that Volodymyr Zelensky could visit the White House on Friday to sign a rare earth minerals deal to pay for US military aid to defend against a full-scale Russian invasion.

The announcement followed several days of tense negotiations between the US and Ukraine, in which Zelensky claimed the US was pressuring him to sign a deal worth more than $500 billion that would force "10 generations" to return it.

"I heard he's coming on Friday. Of course that's fine with me if he wants to. And he would like to sign it with me. And I understand it's a big, very big deal," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Asked what Ukraine would get from the deal, Trump said "$350 billion, military equipment and the right to fight."

“We have more or less negotiated our deal on land and various other things. We will seek … general security for Ukraine later. I don’t think it will be a problem. There are a lot of people who want to do this, and I spoke to Russia about it. They didn’t seem to have a problem with it. So I think they understand that they are not going to come back. And once we do that, they are not going to come back,” he said.

The initial US proposal, which included a 100% financial interest in the fund into which revenues from natural resource extraction would go, had provoked anger in Ukraine and other allies in Europe.

“I am not signing something that 10 generations of Ukrainians will have to pay for,” Zelenskyy said of the initial proposal.
