German police said they have busted an international cybercrime gang that had been threatening large companies and institutions for years, taking millions of euros.

Working with other partner law enforcement forces, including Europol, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and authorities in Ukraine, police in Düsseldorf said they managed to identify 11 people linked to the group, which has been operating in several countries since since 2010. In recent years, the band has gone by names like Indrik Spider, Double Spider and Grief.

Among the best-known victims of this group's attacks were Britain's National Health Service and Düsseldorf University Hospital, whose computers in 2020 were infected with a virus called DoppelPaymer. A woman, who needed emergency treatment, died after authorities were forced to send her for treatment in another city.

Dirk Kunze, head of the cybercrimes department at the German police, said that at least 601 victims of this group have been identified worldwide, including 37 in Germany. Europol said that victims in the United States paid this gang at least 40 million euros, in exchange for receiving important data that the gang had blocked through viruses.

Kunze said the gang ran a professional recruitment operation, taking in new members with the promise of paid vacations and asking them to tell about cybercrimes they had committed in the past.

He said police raided Germany and Ukraine on February 28, seizing evidence and arresting several suspects.

Three other suspects are on the run, as they cannot be arrested under European law, Kunze said.

German police said they are Russian nationals Igor Turashev, 41, Irinia Zemlyanikina, 36, and Igor Garshin, 31, who was born in Russia but whose nationality has not yet been released./REL
