Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said his party could hold a referendum on constitutional amendments that would protect women's right to wear headscarves.

Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AK) met with opposition parties on the issue, as political entities are trying to gain support ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections to be held in June 2023. According to polls, support for Erdogan's government is falling. .

Other polls show that few Turks see the headscarf as a matter of debate, while critics and the opposition said the real target of the constitutional changes is the LGBT+ community.

The headscarf has previously been a source of great division in Turkey, which has a Muslim population but is a secular state. However, this issue has fueled controversy after the reforms undertaken during the 20-year rule of Erdogan's party with Islamic roots.

However, the secularist CHP party has for a long time opposed the wearing of the headscarf in Parliament and in public institutions, bringing back the debate on the right to the headscarf last month.

In response, Erdogan proposed constitutional reforms on the issue, along with several measures to protect the family from what he calls "perverse trends" that appear to be targeting same-sex marriage laws around the world.

President Erdogan said the referendum could be held if the changes do not receive the support of 360 deputies in the 600-seat Parliament. His party and nationalist allies together have 334 MPs.

"We are ready to take other steps, including the referendum", Erdogan said in front of the Parliament.

On November 2, the AK Party met with the three opposition parties and the largest opposition entity, the Republican People's Party (CHP), said it would not support the changes. /REL
