Erdogan talks with Putin: I am ready to mediate peace in Ukraine

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was ready to broker a "permanent peace" between Ukraine and Moscow in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

"During the phone call, President Erdogan reiterated that Turkey is ready to undertake the task of facilitating and mediating the establishment of a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine," a statement from his office said.

The Turkish leader has made similar offers in the past and facilitated meetings between Ukrainian and Russian officials, but no peace talks to date. The pair discussed prisoner exchanges, particularly wounded prisoners, and the exchange of views on the situation around Ukraine continued.

Russian state media said the call with Erdogan focused on the prisoner exchange but also touched on what reports described as the West's rejection of Moscow's proposed Christmas truce. Erdogan's office said they also discussed the wheat corridor to allow Ukraine and Russia to transport vital supplies of wheat and other crops through the Bosphorus to international markets.

He added that the two men also talked about ammonium exports. Putin and Erdogan confirmed their cooperation and stated that their priorities still include Russian gas supplies and the creation of a regional gas hub in Turkey. Kiev has rejected the idea of a ceasefire while Russian troops still occupy the territory, but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is open to "genuine peace talks" with Russia that would include Moscow withdrawing forces, compensating Ukraine for damages and cooperation in war crimes investigations.

Putin ordered a 36-hour ceasefire ahead of Orthodox Christmas on January 7, but the move was opposed by Kiev, which said there could be no ceasefire until Russia withdraws its troops from the occupied territories. The pair also discussed normalizing Turkey's diplomatic relations with Syria, a key Russian ally, more than a decade after Ankara cut ties and backed armed groups trying to topple the regime in Damascus.
