The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has reacted after the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro, the last big boss of Cosa Nostra, after 30 years on the run.

"A great victory for the state that shows that it does not give up in front of the Mafia", commented Meloni.

"One day after the anniversary of Toto Riina's arrest, another organized crime boss surrenders to justice". "After 30 years of escape, the super boss has ended in handcuffs", commented the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini.

Denaro was considered the heir to the "throne" of the Sicilian Mafia, since the arrest of Toto Riina in 1993 and the complete isolation of his friend, Bernardo Provenzano.

Denaro is the son of Don Ciccio, boss of the branch of Castelvetrano (Trapani), historical ally of the Corleones.

He was sentenced in absentia to life in prison for dozens of murders, including that of little Giuseppe di Matteo, the son of a penitent who melted in acid after being held hostage for two years. He has also been convicted as a participant in the assassinations that took the lives of the two most famous Italian anti-mafia prosecutors, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, and for several other mafia events.

January 16, 2023 will be remembered as the day that ended the escape of what was considered the last big boss of Cosa Nostra.
