New epidemic? Cases of an antibiotic-resistant disease are on the rise in China

A new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that China may be the country behind the global rise of a new infectious disease: supergonorrhea.

According to the report, published this week, about 98% of bacteria samples taken from STD patients in 13 Chinese provinces were able to successfully avoid one of the first-line antibiotics.

Of more than 2,800 bacterial samples from gonorrhea patients in China collected in 2022, about 98% were found to be resistant to the drug ciprofloxacin, while about 78% resisted treatment with penicillin. Likewise, about 17% of the samples were resistant to azithromycin and cefixime, while 8% were immune to ceftriaxone, a much higher percentage than that recorded by other countries.

Cases of antibiotic-resistant supergonorrhea are not new. However, China has rates 40 times higher than those of other countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, which worries doctors.

For example, in 2022 in the United Kingdom, only 0.2% of samples showed reduced sensitivity to ceftriaximo, the same figure recorded in the United States between 2016 and 2020. Meanwhile, in Canada, resistance to the same antibiotic was about 0.6 % between 2017 and 2021./VoxNews
