Asma Assad, wife of Syrian President Bashar Assad, has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), his office revealed on Tuesday.
The condition was identified after the first lady underwent a series of tests after developing symptoms, the statement said. The 48-year-old will require isolation during her treatment, she added.
AML is a very deadly type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and can progress rapidly. Previous chemotherapy is a risk factor for the disease. Asma Assad was previously diagnosed with breast cancer, but announced her full recovery in 2019 after undergoing chemotherapy at a Syrian military hospital.
The British-born investment banker married Bashar Assad in December 2000, five months after he took power following the death of his father, Hafez Assad.
Asma, the "flower of the desert", who became the First Lady of "Hell"
Even more elegant and glamorous than Rania of Jordan, when in 2000, 25-year-old Asma Assad arrived in Damascus to marry Bashar Assad, she raised great hopes. "This young couple will bring freedom to Syria", commented the optimists.
After thirty years of the iron dictatorship of Hafez Assad, Bashar's father, it seemed that the time for a thaw had come. Bashar was not destined for politics, he had gone to study in London, where he became an oculist. And there he fell in love with the beautiful daughter of a Syrian cardiologist, and a functionary of the Damascus embassy in England. Asma is more English than Syrian: born and raised in London, she studied French and Spanish at university.
Civil war, inexplicable turn
For 11 years, almost nothing happened. The Syrian regime was not democratized. However, the presidential couple, also because of its youth and class, when traveling abroad, caused admiration. And Syria remained outside the turbulence of Iraq. But, in 2011, the Arab Spring also broke out in Damascus, just like in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Young people took to the squares, demanding reforms.
At first, Assad reacted by liberalizing the Internet. But then, the police crushed the demonstrations with blood. And the civil war started, which continues to this day.
Assad's Western wife was thought to have exerted a moderating influence on her husband. But, nothing. The gentile oculist was transformed into a cruel leader, just like his father. And behind him, the lovely Asma, without any hesitation.
From desert flower to First Lady of Hell
The American magazine Vogue, which in 2010 called Asman "Flower of the desert", removed the article from its website.
In these years of massacres, Asma gave herself to the regime's propaganda, being photographed by her husband's side and visiting war victims. But no statement, not even after the first accusations against Assad, that he had used chemical weapons in 2013. Russia, Syria's ally for half a century, supports the Assad regime.
And she, in the only interview given to a Russian television, said that she supports her husband against ISIS terrorists. Who, however, are not the only enemies of the Damascus government.
Reserved e-mails: 3 thousand euros for a pair of shoes
Meanwhile, some of her secret emails have been published. In one of the orders, the purchase of a pair of shoes with 16 centimeter heels, 3 thousand euros. In another, she responds to her friend, the daughter of the emir of Qatar, who invites her to leave Syria, before her husband meets the end of Gaddafi or Mubarak. But she refuses the hospitality. I know that as long as the Russians support him, Assad is safe. And it can be held firmly behind the defender of secularism, against ISIS.
The "angel" who is accused of war crimes
Asma al-Assad is accused of inciting, aiding and abetting war crimes by Syrian government forces.
Asma al-Assad, 48, who was born and educated in London before becoming Syria's first lady in 2000, is being investigated following legal claims that her speeches and public appearances in support of the Syrian army implicate him in the aforementioned crimes, including the use of chemical weapons.
Asma al-Assad was considered one of the most charming and educated "First Ladies", but since the beginning of the war, she is considered the "devil with the face of an angel", as she supported her husband in killing the population.
Despite the fact that the country has been at war for years, she continues to live a life of luxury.
