Military experts: If China invades Taiwan, it would fail, but the US would also suffer heavy losses

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would fail because the United States would help defend the island, but it would come at a debilitating cost to the US military itself, according to a US think tank.

Military experts said that any potential direct participants in a war, the United States, China, Taiwan and Japan, would experience "huge" losses.

Chinese missiles would probably destroy US air bases in Japan and as far away as Guam, and sink two US aircraft carriers, but the Chinese invasion force itself would be destroyed before it could take any significant part of Taiwan and would eventually be thwarted. from its goal of capturing the capital Taipei, according to most scenarios tested for the start of a possible war.

This, as well as the damage inflicted on mainland targets by Taiwanese counterattacks, could destabilize Chinese Communist Party rule, the report said.

"We reached two conclusions. First, under most circumstances, China is unlikely to succeed in its operational objectives, or capture Taipei. Second, the cost of war would be high for everyone involved, certainly including the United States," said Eric Heginbotham, a security expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The experts tested 24 different scenarios focused on China's attempts to invade Taiwan, with the result being that without America's help, Taiwan would be occupied by China in three months or less.
