"Jail for Bolsonaro", attack on Congress in Brazil, large

Tens of thousands of people in Brazil have held pro-democracy rallies in response to an attack on Congress by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro. In the country's largest city, São Paulo, crowds chanted that Bolsonaro should go to jail.

About 1,500 people were arrested during Sunday's riots in the capital Brasília, which came a week after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in after October elections. Protests were also held in other cities. On Monday, street rallies were held in a number of cities and towns. Part of Paulista Avenue, Brazil's most famous street, was blocked as crowds filled the area, singing, dancing and cheering for justice.

Many protesters wore red, the colors of Lula's Workers' Party, while others waved placards saying "No amnesty for coup plotters" and called for those responsible to be punished. There were also calls for "Prison for Bolsonaro".

"I don't agree with what happened in Brasília - it was a nightmare. I don't agree with those who believe that with democracy you can use your power to destroy democracy," one protester told the BBC.

"I want to show the world and our country that even though there are thousands of people who believe that the elections were not valid, here in Brazil, we have a huge number of people who believe that we can trust our government, we can we believe in our democracy", he said.

In Sao Paulo, where the protest was also held, there was a heavy police presence. The riots in Brazil came after supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro refused to accept the change of power. About 3,000 protesters attacked Brazil's three main institutions, Congress, the Planalto Palace (the seat of government) and the Supreme Court. Supporters of Bolsonaro have allegations of irregularities in the way the October elections were conducted.

World leaders have condemned the unrest in Brazil, while on Monday evening President Lula visited Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court along with the country's governors, condemning "terrorist acts" and vowing to punish the perpetrators. About 1,200 people were arrested by police on Monday evening and another 300 on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Governor of Brasília, Ibaneis Rocha, has been dismissed from his post for 90 days by the Supreme Court. Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes accused him of failing to prevent riots.
