US President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment at Elon Musk's criticism of his main budget bill.

"Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we'll have any more," Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday.

It was the president's most direct criticism so far of Musk's lobbying efforts against proposals to cut taxes and cut government spending — a plan that has drawn criticism from Musk and some Republicans.

In response, Musk doubled down on his stance on the bill on platform X, saying it was full of "wasteful spending," wasteful government spending, and writing "Either you're going to get an ugly bill, or a beautiful bill."
