Gisèle Pelicot, the French woman on trial with her ex-husband who drugged her and allowed other men to abuse her for 10 years, has given her testimony from the court podium.

The mass rape victim, whose story has shocked the world, told a court in southern France that going public with her case should help other women and change society.

The 71-year-old told the Avignon court that she wants raped women to know that "it's not our shame, it's theirs".

"I want all women who have been raped to say: Mrs. Pelicot did it, so can I. I don't want them to be ashamed anymore", she said, referring to the fact that she requested an open trial and the showing of the rape videos.

She added that during the last few weeks she had seen wives, mothers and sisters of the defendants who got on the podium and said that the accused were "extraordinary men".

"Just like the one I had at home. But a rapist isn't just someone you meet in a dark parking lot late at night. It can be found in the family as well, among friends."

Pelicot said that it is "completely destroyed" and must rebuild itself. "I don't know if my life will be enough to understand."

Addressing the ex-husband as Mr. Pelicot, she said: “I wish I could still call her Dominique. We lived together for 50 years. I was a happy, fulfilled woman. You were a loving, caring husband and I never doubted you. We have laughed and cried together", she told him with a trembling voice.

Dominique has admitted that he knew men online who allowed them to rape his wife who was under the influence of strong sedatives and sleeping pills that he secretly gave her. It all happened in the time frame 2010-2020.

Gisèle said she felt lucky to have him by her side when she was suffering from health problems that later turned out to be related to the medication he was giving her.

"I'm trying to understand how this man, who was perfect for me, could have done this. How could he betray me at this point? How could you allow strangers in my room? I want to tell him: I have tried to lift you higher and higher, towards the light. You chose the darkest depths of human nature. You made this choice."

The 71-year-old confessed that Dominique often cooked for her and gave her ice cream after dinner which was the method he used to drug her: "I told him 'how lucky I am, you are a sweetheart, you really care for me'."

Pelicot said he didn't feel dizzy or have a fast heart rate and must have passed out quickly. She woke up in her bed the next morning feeling tired, but she believed it was because of the long walks.

"I had gynecological problems and some mornings I woke up feeling as if my waters had broken. The signs were there, but I could never decipher them," she said.

Most of the defendants who raped Pelicot say that they cannot be guilty because they did not know that she was unconscious and they were "not aware" that they were raping her.

The trial has been open since September 2. Despite the long daily hearings, it has reached its half and there are still defendants who are expected to be questioned. The decision is expected at the end of December.

Protests have been organized across France to show support for Gisele Pelicot, with many women expressing admiration for her courage.
