Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country remains committed to pursuing suspected followers of late cleric Fethullah Gulen.

"We will continue to fight FETO until it disappears completely," Erdogan told members of his party, using the official acronym for Gulen's group.

The Turkish government considers Gulen's Hizmet movement to be terrorist.

Ankara blames Gulen's network for orchestrating the failed coup in Turkey in 2016, and has since arrested suspected supporters of the group.

Gulen, who has lived in the United States since 1999, died in a hospital in Pennsylvania on Sunday evening.

The cleric was an ally of Erdogan until 2013.

Gulen himself denied involvement in the coup attempt and accused Erdogan of having orchestrated these events.

On July 15, 2016, a faction of the Turkish military attempted a coup against the Erdogan government. The efforts failed and more than 250 people lost their lives while another 2,000 were injured.

Under a state of emergency, Erdogan's government fired more than 100,000 civil servants and arrested tens of thousands of suspected Gulen supporters.

Observers expect Gulen's movement to disband after some time, after the death of its leader.
