"People will be killed", the "bomb" storm hits California,

US authorities have ordered evacuations in northern California as they are threatened by a major storm that is expected to hit the coast. In these areas there have been problems due to floods and landslides. California's governor has declared a state of emergency for the storm, the second to hit the state in a week. Forecasters say it will form into a 'bomb cyclone', a type of explosive storm, and possibly kill people.

Northern California is expected to be hit hardest. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood and high wind warning for the entire Bay Area in northern California, saying winds are expected to down trees and cause power outages.

"Simply put, this is likely one of the most impactful large-scale systems this meteorologist has seen in a long time," the NWS forecaster for the region said in a weather advisory. The BBC, referring to forecasters' forecasts, writes that the storm can cause flooding, landslides, falling trees, power outages, and the loss of human lives is not excluded.

An evacuation order has been issued in Santa Cruz County, south of San Francisco, due to the "high probability" that some neighborhoods will become inaccessible due to flooding.

Further south, in Santa Barbara County, officials also ordered residents living near areas deforested by massive summer wildfires to evacuate. The order also affects the affluent community of Montecito, home to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan and Oprah Winfrey. Classes were canceled for Thursday in school districts across Northern California, including for the 8,000 students enrolled in San Francisco Public Schools.
