For the first time in years, Denmark has recorded no bank robberies. Cash transactions are almost non-existent in the Nordic country. Danes are using credit cards and smartphones to make payments.

The Danish Association of Bank Employees welcomed the news on Tuesday that there had been no bank robberies in 2022.

"Finance Denmark", the association of the banking sector, said that only about 20 bank subsidiaries in the whole country have cash in hand. But the number of bank branches has fallen from 219 in 1991 to 56 in 2021, spokesman Steen Lund Olsen said in a statement.

Media reports noted that in Denmark, bank withdrawals have fallen by around three-quarters each year over the past six years. In 2000, 221 bank robberies were recorded, said the association Finance Denmark, and in 2021 there was only one robbery.

Criminals turned their attention to ATMs, scoring 18 robberies in 2016. But even ATM robberies have dropped to zero amid increased security and technical measures, according to the association.

Finance Denmark says that in recent years criminals have turned their attention to cyber fraud.
