5-year-old arrested by ICE

Democratic lawmakers have visited Liam Conejo Ramos, a 5-year-old child being held in a federal detention center in Texas, following his and his father's arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis.

Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, Liam's father, recounted their situation to deputies Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett, who saw him for 30 minutes yesterday in a courtroom inside the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley. He said the boy sleeps a lot, asks frequently about his mother and school friends, but is not eating and seems sad.

In a live broadcast on CBS News, Rep. Joaquin Castro informed Liam's school principal about his condition: " He's not in an emergency, but his father says he's in some kind of depression. He's not eating and keeps asking when they're going to get out of there. He wants to go back to school and asks about the bag and hat he was wearing when he was detained by ICE ." The principal, moved by the story, promised to buy him another hat.

Ramos' mother spoke about his deteriorating health earlier this week to MPR News . "Liam is getting sick because the food they are getting is not of good quality. He has stomach pains, he is vomiting, he has a fever and he won't eat anymore," she said, according to La Repubblica.

Representative Castro called on President Donald Trump to think about how children of this age feel in such a situation.

"I would ask President Trump, who has grandchildren the age of some of the children we met today, to think about what it would mean for them to be behind bars ," Castro said during a press conference later, where he and other Democrats called for the release of Liam and the other detainees.

The arrest of Liam and his father occurred on January 20 as part of a major operation in Minneapolis, which sparked massive protests in the city.

A photo of the child, wearing a blue winter hat and carrying a bag with the Spider-Man logo, sparked strong reactions, making Liam a symbol of " the violence of the ICE system and detention centers."
