China executes 11 members of a mafia family

China has executed 11 members of a Myanmar mafia family known for running large-scale frauds through fake online romances.

The Ming crime family was sentenced to death in September by a court in the city of Wenzhou, in eastern China, which also carried out the executions.

They were found guilty of serious crimes, including intentional murder, wounding, unlawful confinement, fraud, and organizing illegal casinos.

According to Chinese authorities, the group was responsible for the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens and the injury of many others.

The verdict was upheld by China's Supreme People's Court, which called the evidence complete and convincing. Family members were allowed to meet relatives before the execution. Their criminal empire collapsed in 2023, when they were arrested and handed over to China by ethnic militias in Myanmar.

The event coincided with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's visit to Beijing, where he also discussed human rights issues with President Xi Jinping.
