At the top of the list of narcotics, the year 2022 has brought a new enemy to the US DEA, the main institution in the United States dealing with the prevention of their traffic, at least in terms of dangerousness.
It is about fentanyl, a synthetic drug that is universally known, in its legal form, as an analgesic, a drug used against acute pain, mainly after operations, and which is available in any pharmacy, against a medical prescription.
But in its illegal form, this substance has begun to be used more and more as a drug, where a dose of 2 milligrams has effects that are estimated to be 100 times stronger than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin, producing numerous hallucinations , but also low blood pressure and depression, while an overdose in many cases leads to death.
The lower cost than heroin and cocaine, the synthetic nature that enables production anywhere, and the rigid structure that simplifies transportation, has transformed fentanyl into the new "king" of international traffic, since China has now passed into the hands of Mexican cartels as well. such as that of Sinaloa and Jalisco.
New data in the DEA's annual report give only a fraction of the global dimension of this disturbing phenomenon.
Only during this year, about 380 million doses of fentanyl have been seized by the US authorities, in the form of more than 4 tons of cigar material and more than 50 million grains, which are the result of mixing with other elements that reduce side effects.
It's a doubled amount from 2021, and the trend seems to be increasing. In that year, overdose deaths from this drug have been more than 70 thousand, more than two-thirds of all narcotics in total. Potentially, according to the DEA, the amount seized this year could kill any American citizen.
